Product description

The Megger 656902 split-box pipe and cable locator discovers the location and depth of underground pipes, cables, and wires and finds buried metallic masses. It has a transmitter that transmits a frequency into a buried pipe, cable, or wire, and a receiver that detects the transmitted frequency to trace the buried feature. In inductive location mode, the transmitter is not physically connected to the feature to be traced, enabling features to be traced if they are not exposed or if they are in areas with a low risk of interference from other buried features. In conductive location, the transmitter is physically connected to the buried feature, providing more accurate tracing of features than when using inductive location mode, particularly in areas where there is a high risk of interference from other buried features. The operator can choose between the transmitter's high or low signal strength settings to increase or decrease the strength of the signal output for more accurate locating. The operator can also choose between the receiver's high or low signal sensitivity settings to increase or decrease the receiver's sensitivity to the transmitted signal. The transmitter has a pulse setting that provides a pulsing signal to conserve battery life, improve detection when there is a weak signal, or distinguish the transmitted signal when there is interference in the area. The receiver's mass locating feature finds buried metallic masses, such as manholes and valve caps, without use of the transmitter. A light bar on the receiver indicates the strength of the detected signal, and a speaker on the receiver emits an audible tone that gets louder as the detected signal gets stronger. A level gauge on the receiver aids in determining the depth of the buried feature. The receiver and transmitter have a low battery indicator. A headphone jack on the receiver allows headphones (sold separately) to be used when working in quiet environments. The Megger 656902 split-box pipe and cable locator comes with a 3' direct connection cable with two copper clamps for connecting the transmitter to the buried pipe, cable, or wire to be traced. The included ground stake grounds the transmitter when it is directly connected to the buried fixture to help prevent damage to the transmitter and injury to the operator due to shock. The unit comes with a tote bag for transportation and storage.

Pipe and cable locators, also called utility locators, find pipes, cables, and wires that are buried in the ground for determining where to excavate on a site and for locating buried fixtures in need of maintenance or replacement. Pipe and cable locators are used in electrical, plumbing, telecommunications, utility maintenance, construction, and home repair applications. They have a transmitter and a receiver and use active or passive methods of location. In active location, the transmitter induces a signal at a specific frequency either into the ground, where it's picked up by buried utilities, or directly into a pipe, cable, or wire that is connected to the transmitter. As the signal is being transmitted into the buried utility, the receiver is passed over an area until it detects the signal and locates the buried pipe, cable, or wire. In passive location, the receiver searches for alternating current (AC) frequencies or radio waves emitted by energized cables, wires, and pipes without the need for a transmitter. Pipe transmitters, signal clamps, and grounding stakes can be used to help improve locator accuracy.

Megger manufactures equipment for cable fault locating, protective relay testing, telecommunications and data integrity, and power quality testing under multiple brand names, among them Megger, Biddle, States, and AVO. The company, founded in 1889, is headquartered in Dover, England, and meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9001:2008.
